AIM - Vocational Center / A tailoring shop for women in Port Loko
In February 2019 we have set-up a small vocational center for women in Port Loko (Sierra Leone). The tailor center started small with only 7 women, but as we believe in the bottom-up approach we are sure, it will grow and grow further so that more and more women will get a training in future and slowly become self-independent.
Two experienced tailors, Madou and Osman, were employed as teachers to train the women. Some of the women were former Sowies (women, who traditionally practice FGM – Female Genital Mutilation). After attending workshops against FGM implemented by AIM, these women gave up this harmful custom and threw away their knives. Instead, they are now eager to create their income as seamstress. Educational opportunities for girls and women in Sierra Leone are still very limited, especially in rural areas. Thus, we are happy and proud to be able to build up an alternative, together with AIM and in cooperation with the women themselves! It will surely create many new perspectives!
With joy, curiosity and pride the women started their first sewing projects and were the first to be commissioned to sew pillowcases, laundry bags and many more products for the LINDLEY LINDENBERG Hotel in Frankfurt (www.thelindenberg.com/lindley). It is wonderful how these colorful fabrics from Africa found their way into our bedrooms. We are looking forward to expand this cooperation in the future. Of course, we will keep you up-to-date on new developments!
